When asking the question of the best Allen wrench set for you, it comes down to what you are using the tools for?

When assembling furniture, fixing bicycles, servicing your chainsaw, or any other task requiring tightening bolts or screws, you’ll often find yourself reaching for an Allen wrench or a hex key. Some hex tools or Allen keys have ball ends, and others are straight. Most of us need a set of Allen wrenches in our arsenal. However, for most, it is only a tool we will use regularly if we assemble bicycles or furniture for a living.

This means most of us only want one or two hex key sets in our toolbox. So, do we choose a set with a straight or ball end? The advantage of ball end hex keys is the fastener access angle. My experience is that I prefer using a well-constructed wrench set that includes a ball end. If I can use a ball hex tool over a straight hex tool, that is what I do. I don’t always need to approach fasteners from an angle, but the freedom to stray from perfectly straight-on allows for flexibility in most hand motions.

The only negative with a good ball end wrench set is that top-quality sets don’t include the smaller ball hex drivers in specific smaller sizes due to the higher likelihood of breakage.

I love using a t-handle Allen key. Second on my list would be a folding Allen wrench set and, finally, a standard hex key wrench set. Among all of this, you get excellent ratchet wrenches and excellent Allen key socket sets. I rarely use L-shaped hex wrenches anymore. 

Some of the ratchet Allen wrench sets are bulky and heavy. However, there are some seriously well-made and light sets, which you will see below.

Look at Allen key socket sets if you already have a well-made socket wrench. This way, your socket wrench becomes an even more versatile tool. A socket set won’t work in all situations, but if you have invested in a good socket wrench, your socket wrench then effectively becomes a versatile set of Allen keys as well.

You want to choose the best Allen key set for you. If, like me, you enjoy the feel of a t-handle, then buy the best set of t-handle hex keys for your toolbox.

One advantage of a folding set is that it has lots of Allen sizes in one place. Often, you have a project where you may need multiple Allen key sizes. Having one folding hex key set on you makes life easier. A folding set of hex wrenches may not be great for extreme torquing, but the portability factor can’t be ignored.

Allen keys can be very slow because the end often needs to be repeatedly reinserted. This straightforward all-steel tool is a permanent solution. It has left/right ratcheting, with a 360˚ rotating handle. So, it speeds up your work and lets you eliminate those loose Allen keys cluttering your toolbox.

This wrench set offers the best of all worlds. One negative: the handle of this Allen wrench is made of steel and is less comfortable than the Gorilla Grip above.

The tools are well-made and excellent fitting. Additionally, this set looks like it will last for ages. I would say this is the best ratchet wrench for quick fixes. The portability and ratchet make it the ideal adjustable wrench for multipurpose jobs.

Again, this design is not the best way to go if you are doing work requiring heavy torque.

We rate the TEKTON Hex Key Wrench Set as the winner for a standard Allen key set. This is a 30-piece set that comes in a sturdy plastic housing. Often, these cases don’t securely hold the bits in place, which is not the ‘case’ here.

The reason we feel this is one of the best Allen wrench sets available is the construction of each individual wrench. The wrenches are finished in black oxide for durability and rust prevention. They also have a really lovely fit into most Allen fasteners. This gives you confidence each time you turn the wrench.

The majority of Allen wrenches are well made today, but this set feels that little bit special when you address the fastener. This is a good choice for the best Allen key standard set with a complete set of Allen keys (30-piece), so you rarely can’t find the correct size wrench. The wrenches in this set make it an easy buy for your workshop – especially at the price.

As we discussed, you want to choose the best Allen wrench set for your needs. You never want to overload a toolbox, but you should have a few different wrench sets so you cover multiple scenarios. There are fewer things more frustrating than having multiple tools, but none of them fit the fastener you are working on.

One portable set, one heavy-duty set, and maybe even keep a set that includes both sae hex and metric hex?

The choice of the best Allen key set may not only be which set is best but, as above, what each set can do for you. Ideally, you want to own the best set in a few of the above categories. This way, you have an excellent set of wrenches for each particular job.
